My Top 3 South Florida Eats and Treats - April 2018

April 3, 2018

I have crossed paths with numerous delicious dishes and restaurants in the last two months while embarking on my new pledged food journey.  I created this list with confidence knowing that the heavy majority of people that read and try something will be delighted. I have culminated these recent interactions into the following top 3 items to taste around sunny South Florida in your near future!

1. Cap'n Crunch Pancakes From Eating House

I was in my barber’s chair, as I routinely do on weekends, at his second shop in Coral Gables one Saturday morning and we ended up casually chatting about my new food and travel blog.  He then asked me, "What do you think about the Cap'n Crunch Pancakes from Eating House?"  To which I replied with a curious raised eyebrow, "I have never been nor tried these pancakes that you speak of."  I immediately heard the buzzer from the razor shut off before he crisply spun me around 180 degrees and looked into my eyes in disbelief (for the best barber in South Florida - check Moon out here!)  He made me pinky promise to try them as soon as possible so I made plans to check them out with my parents, sister, grandma, uncle and aunt the following weekend.  Even though it is casual (the staff had ‘Stoner Things’ shirts on), I recommend making reservations for brunch, as good food attracts more people.  We collectively ordered pretty much everything on the menu, you know, just to be safe.  The candied bacon was amazing and the tator tots with coca cola ketchup was cool and the braised pork calentado with chimmi was special.  But I was not prepared for what was to come next - Cap'n Crunch Pancakes.  After my first bite, I looked up shaking my head in disbelief that something on this planet tasted this good.  As I tried to process what in the hell was happening, I legit had a single tear run down my face as I locked eyes with my Aunt across the table before asking me if I was alright.  I only let the others have one portioned bite each before making them order another for themselves.  On my way out, I asked to talk to a manager to give them a hug and the gentleman I asked was actually the owner.  He shared that it is one of their more popular dishes; they use the cereal in the batter itself, the syrup is mixed in with the condensed milk and the butter has vanilla in it.  Because of how they make the batter, the consistency of the pancakes is something special and truly one of a kind.  I’m not even a pancake guy, I usually go waffle in that situation, but please - let me know what you think!

2. Donuts From The Salty Donut

Usually I have a specific item that I would like others to try but, in this case, every single donut that I tasted from this 'Artisanal Donut Shoppe' was just next level!  I got in contact with Andy and Katyln, director and manager respectively, at this new age donut and coffee shop in the heart of Wynwood, Miami.  If you are not familiar with Wynwood, it is the 'artsy, hipster & trendy' neighborhood in Miami that unites people from all backgrounds together in an expressive explosion, overall my favorite place to frequent down here.  I noticed almost immediately that every single one of their employees took great pride in working here, they weren't there just to collect a check.  The way that they moved, acted, communicated and talked about their products was refreshing and rare to witness.  Speaking to them, they shared some of the events that they recently participated in, such as the South Beach Food & Wine Festival, before offering me four of their top donuts to inhale for review.  Keep in mind that their menu changes as they have one set of donuts year-round and a few seasonal ones that are constantly rotating.  I tried the 1. white chocolate tres leches, 2. guava and cheese, 3. vegan coconut samoa & the 4. flan donut.  It's a close call for me, but I rank the guava and cheese first closely followed by the flan donut.  They are all so unique and you can tell a great deal of love go into each creation.  The guava and cheese mix was very complimentary (a Miami / Cuban staple), while the flan donut had a crispy sugar coated top similar to that of creme brulee that made the textures mix and hit every note.  Do yourself a favor and grab half a dozen and some craft coffee whenever you are in the area, you cannot go wrong here and good news - they are opening up another location in South Miami soon!

3. Toston Cheeseburger Topped w/ Queso Frito & Cajun Fries From Pincho Factory

So, I know a plethora of people have already eaten here and possibly formulated an opinion regarding Pincho Factory, but I had one hell of a first experience that I want to share (yes, I was late to the party).  I went knowing exactly what I wanted and ordered just that: a toston cheeseburger, add queso frito with a side of Cajun fries.  The fried plantain replaces the bread which already made the sandwich interesting but on top of that, I added a piece of queso frito to customize my artwork.  Queso Frito is typically served as a side, usually in Nicaraguan and other Latin cuisines, and is a salty white cheese with a high melting point so it holds its consistency when dug into even after being fried.  The Cajun fries are some of the very best out there, they reminded me of a better version of the animal fries from the West Coast chain - In and Out Burger.  The Cajun fries are topped with grilled onions, Cajun seasoning & their special pink sauce.  Since I was out to lunch during work - I wasted no time in digging in, after a dozen pictures of course.  The cilantro sauce on the toston cheeseburger really brought everything together and I am already looking forward to coming back for round 2 with a new set of work buddies.
